Treatment Centers

What’s the difference between AOT and ACT

when it comes to treatment

for the mentally ill?

Assisted Outpatient Treatment (AOT) is supported by the Treatment Advocacy Center (Arlington, VA). Maryland is one of seven states not having AOT or a plan to force the mentally ill to undergo treatment outside of a hospital setting.  (www.treatmentadvocacycenter.com)

Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) is endorsed by NAMI and enrollment in ACT is voluntary.  (www.nami.org)

What residential treatment centers have you used successfully or unsuccessfully for relatives diagnosed with a mental illness and drug/alcohol problem?

Has anyone used any treatment centers in Maryland for a loved one with a Dual Diagnosis? Which ones would you recommend?

Some F2F members have had some questionable experiences this year with Gaudenzia Drug Rehab & Alcoholic Center.  Seems their mentally ill loved ones were kicked out in less than 24-hours after being delivered there by the court system AND in spite of a Mission Statement that claims the following:

“Gaudenzia’s mission is to help people affected by chemical dependency, mental illness and related conditions to achieve a better quality of life – allowing them to live as productive and accountable individuals.”

Is that true?  Is that really true? Some family members report that this facility cannot handle a person with a mental illness UNLESS they are already stabilized.  What’s your experience at this and other treatment centers?
